Hi everyone Usually I run just for myself because I love running, I've never done a fundraiser like this before. but it turns out that the Sydney Marathon is a major fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation which is a charity close to my heart so this time I'm running for something. I work as a physician and researcher in the Westmead BMT and Cell Therapies Program. The LFA helps my patients in lots of ways, from providing reliable info about blood diseases on their website to organising volunteers to bring patients to and from treatment and clinic appointments when they don't have their own transport. This is really important as patients having chemo need to avoid infectious illnesses so public transport is better avoided even when they are relatively well. Treatment can go for years so this kind of practical support is really valuable. The Leukaemia Foundation also supports research. They have been great supporters of my research (in the Cell Therapies Research Group at Westmead Institute/University of Sydney) for many years and have enabled a number of important cell therapy trials to be performed. In the long run, we are working hard to make transplant safer and more effective for patients. So, if you have a bit spare, please donate as it really will be put to good use. Thanks! Emily.
