For Beyond Blue

I am running the 2019 Half Marathon for a very personal reason. I believe the more we talk about mental health the less of a taboo subject it becomes. If we have any other illness we talk about it openly - then there is depression (the silent illness) For those who know me, you will know that its a cause that i support with passion. I have depression and have battled with it for most of my adult life. The hardest days consisted of trying to put on a brave face when you feel worthless and a burden on the people you love and care about the most. Getting out of bed is a struggle and you put on an act to deal with day to day life. I was once told that a mental illness is a chemical imbalance in your brain and the comfort i took from that was overwhelming. Your brain controls your body, your body needs to be healthy and like your actions determine outcomes. The moral of my story is depression is real and you live with it every day. I have learned to channel and manage my depression and it motivates me to train at the gym, give 100% at Judo, embrace every lesson at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and running ....giving back to others and also learning to love what I do. Every day was a challenge and its now manageable but for others who are living with it its hard. The other side of living with depression is a breath of fresh air but getting there is quite the journey. Its a long journey to overcome and there are so many people with this illness suffering in silence. 3 million people are living with depression and anxiety and too many people don't get help and take their own lives. Its time to talk openly about mental health. Help me to make a difference by supporting my cause. The hardest part for me now is running 21 kms but knowing i'm doing it for a great cause and one close to my heart makes it all worth it. Lets make talking about mental health the norm
